MY LIFE STORY
WALK/DON’T WALK
IT RECORDS
Jake Shillingford is a man with self-belief the size of a planet. Despite the critical bitch-slapping his every thought provokes, despite being dropped by Parlophone after having five Top 40 hits, he still drags his wheezing gangshow onward. A lovesick vignette in the style of Squeeze with knocked-off dancey beats, 'Walk Don’t Walk’ carries on the kind of furious punning and retro pastiches that MLS have always gorged themselves on. Nowhere near as bad as the titanically execrable ‘Golden Mile’ album and, therefore, a strange kind of let-down.

Could be better than Cibo Matto's album. Evidence so far suggests genetically modified pop brilliance. Antidote to Shack.

"Recommended" - My Life Story Walk/Don't Walk
(IT Records ITR007).
An early summer sunset tune. Walk/Don't Walk is a well-produced ballad - a mix of Elvis Costello and Squeeze - that is more down tempo than many of their previous records, but lacks their sweeping strings. My Life Story's new album, Joined Up Talking (due for release on February 14) should not be ignored.
Today's Music Week - 29/01/00

Come the musical revolution, this band will be first against the wall. Not content with releasing some of the worst records EVER, My Life Story have taken 'new direction' with Walk/Don't Walk, which is allegedly influenced by Motown. Well, the last time I checked, Adam Rickitt was signed to Polydor. Yes, that's right: in a desperate attempt to sell records, MLS have gone teen-pop. Unfortunately, due to the huge expense of using a full orchestra on his last album, Jake Shillingford now has to record using a second-hand Casio keyboard. Nevertheless, this song is notable in that it achieves the near impossible feat of being their worst single yet. At least songs like Strumpet, execrable though they were, sounded vaguely human. Walk/Don't Walk sounds like it came from a factory production line. Oh, and one last thing: Jake Shillingford has no penis. Which explains a few things... 0/5

MY LIFE STORY
WALK DON'T WALK (IT)
THE Story, eh, readers? Vilified for making two albums of cracking string-laden pop tunes, so drop the strings, still make cracking pop tunes, and face even more vilification, even though "Walk Don’t Walk" is as cool as cool could be. Dom is singularly unimpressed. "Where do I know My Life Story from? Ah yes, that '12 Reasons Why' song. I loved that. (Pulls face at the lyrical reference to Tamagotchi) This is wimp pop. This is 'File Under Deacon Blue' - and all these dreadful pictures of New York on the sleeve. I liked their orchestral stuff - they were probably told to stop being wacky, and this is just a mess. Ugh, no. Terrible. Sorry. I'll put the gayest-sounding band in The Dumper so they won't beat me up."
