Southampton University: The Engineers Ball 1996

Just when we though that Tour Sparkle had finished we were told of one last date at Southampton University. What we weren't told however, was that it was at the Engineers Ball. If we had known that the chances of us getting let in to the venue were almost non existant would we have still driven all the way down to Southampton. Yes, probably!

Our first problem quite clearly was how to get into the building. Unfortunatly we didn't have tickets, neither were we suitably dressed to go to a ball. Somehow we managed to blag our way into the building, I still haven't quite figured out how we did it. Inside most of the band were in the bar either playing pool or the arcade games. The students that were in already seemed completely oblivious to their presence, most of them had probably never even heard of My Life Story. A few drinks later and My Life Story Sunshine Tours were loosing horribly against the band in a pool contest.

The first act of the evening was Gina G. And she proved very popular, within seconds of her appearing on stage the bar was empty (except for us and the orchestra) and the dance floor was full. Gina G performed 4 or 5 songs, finishing up with Oh Ah, Just A Little Bit, although to tell the truth it was difficult to differentiate between each song as they all sounded identical. Gina G was not wearing very much when she first came on stage, and it seemed that the only dance she knew involved taking an item of clothing of during each chorus. It was rather unfortunate for us that she only did five songs instead of six as by the end of her last song she didn't have much left on to take off.

Next up were My Life Story after a short break to set up the stage. The dance floor emptied as everybody made a rush for the bar and unfortunatly it never quite filled up again. It seems that good music can't compete with a live strip show. The set was basically a cut down version of the normal tour set with no encore. I'm sad to say that by normal My Life Story standards it was rather flat. Jake was obviously dissapointed by the small crowd, especially after the crowd Gina G attracted. He also seemed pre-occupied by something, and hinted at the reason by his brief introduction to Megaphone Theology (you work it out!). The stage was a bit on the small side and the was no area for the strings to come and visit the crowd (all 5 of us) so they just stayed in their corner of the stage. Not one of their best performances of the tour, but then again it's hardly surprising infront of a crowd of 10 people.
