MY LIFE STORY LA2, LONDON *** & 1/2
ONCE a tart, always a tart. "You don't mind if I take my top off for this one," teases Jake, knowing the crowd will scweeeem like he’s a thonged David Beckham.
Yet Jake is not the high-kicking, flamboyantly sexy Casanova-in-cabaret he once was. In the name of reinvention, My Life Story have shredded their feather boas and left their tiaras out in the rain to rust. You get the impression that Jake, while he still knows
how to strike a pose, would sooner eat a glitter suit than wear one again.
The new songs mirror this: "It’s A Girl Thing" and "If You Can’t Live Without Me Then Why Aren’t You Dead Yet?" are splashes at strychnine to the chilled champagne of "12 Reasons Why...". The worry is that if existing fans prefer the older stuff (which, judging by their reaction to "Strumpet", "Motorcade", "Sparkle", etc, they do), will the new, darker songs - the ones without choruses like 50ft-high ice cream sundaes - really attract enough
fresh recruits to make Jake the intergalactic star he needs to be?
My verdict? Well, I like My Life Story, they might even be my favourite band, but I'm a bit scared to commit myself, y’know? I need to keep my options open.
Now that's a boy thing.
