Birmingham Megastore 1996
God am I sad or what? No don't tell me, I was still buzzing all night,
well what was left of Sunday morning anyway, after Plymouth and Warwick
but then when I got up it was big anticlimax and feeling-sorry-and-
depressed-for-my self time so what did I do to fix it? Yep, last minute
decision to pay a visit to Tower Records in Birmingham to watch My Life
Story open it, (despite slagging someone else off for having the same
plan at Warwick) when will I learn?
Anyway, it was a grand day out, Gromit, jumped on a train and
arrived to the sound of, well, a disco in a Supermarket really, I half
expected Jarvis to come in pushing a trolley and break into Common
People, but instead we got Alisha's Attic (surprisingly good actually)
and Stereo Nation (unsurprisingly complete bollocks actually, but
hilarious to watch...)
Then whilst waiting for My Life Story - Spotty greasy 12
year old kid with thick Brummie accent and New!!! Stereo Nation CD
clutched in sweaty hand - "Oo are Moi Loif Storeee then?" Answer "the
best band on the planet" "Wot doo they doo loik then?" They play pretty
damn excellent songs, Next Question? "Ow many of em are there loik?"
Eleven "EEYLEVUN? EEYLEVUN? Cor, they wont all fit on the stoige"
etc etc Shut up brat, Clonk...
Anyway time for My Life Story and we got nearly a full set unlike the rest of the
shite that afternoon (Suited and Booted, Sparkle, Kissingdom, Mr Boyd,
April, Motorcade and 12 Reasons) The band were not impressed but we were,
loads of technical bugger ups and sound shit and poor Kumar looking like
he was going to cry (I've cut me thumb and it hurts), probably all
because it was the middle of the afternoon and Danny wasnÕt drunk so
nobody could function properly
BUT!!! Ruth played (hurrah!) and gave out her half of the numbers (which we
got
three each of as nobody else seemed to want them), only two of us to do
the Baa Baa BaaÕs, and NOBODY else was singing, even Sparkle and 12 Reasons
so we decided to try to liven up events by throwing shiny stars and
confetti (borrowed from Warwick) all over the heads of small children in
the front row, and Helen caught the whole extravaganza on video, much to
Paul's amazement.
And then to top it all off the band left with us in hot
pursuit (as we were getting chucked out cos we were the only other people
left in the building) to thousands of screaming teenies and security and
policemen and into a big white stretch limo with blacked out windows,
Popstarz or what!!! No I'm not joking, actually the screaming teenies were
there for the Spice Girls and the limo was provided by Tower but Coo-el!
So now I really do know how it feels to be a Spice Girl...
